1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIA
Serena, Sharapova to meet in US Open 1st round NEW YORK -- Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will finally meet at the US Open, and they'll do it in their very first match. The past US Open champions, two of the biggest stars in women's tennis, were scheduled for an opening-round matchup when the draws were conducted Thursday for the final major of the year. Williams and Sharapova have met in the finals of the other three majors and the 2012 Olympics but have never played each other in the US Open. Williams owns a 19-2 record in their WTA Tour matchups, but that lopsided number shouldn't do much to dampen the hype around what will be the marquee match of the opening round at Flushing Meadows, which begins Monday. Williams will begin another bid for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title. Sharapova isn't the same player she was when she won the 2006 US Open championship -- or beat Williams two years earlier in the final at Wimbledon -- but she remains one of the most popular players among fans in New York. Re: SERENA vs. MARIAWilliams renews Sharapova rivalry by BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller Williams and Sharapova have shared 21 matches and a fair bit of animosity over the years, but this is their first meeting since the Australian Open quarter-final of 2016. Williams has had back problems in recent weeks, while Sharapova has been limited to just six matches since January because of a shoulder injury.
Re: SERENA vs. MARIAThey were supposed to have met at RG last year but S withdrew due to injury. This is a possible scenario here too. Re: USO: SERENA vs. MARIAA Championship match right on the first round, things like this happens only when Maria is around. There is NO such thing as 24.
Re: USO: SERENA vs. MARIAImmediately following their last match, Maria tested positive for Meldo. The Russian doc had recommended 'extra dosage' when playing 'important matches.' Playing Serena at semi stage of the AO would qualify as an 'important match.' Serena hasn't played her meldo-free. Re: SERENA vs. MARIAI just happened to see the draw a few minutes ago and literally laughed out loud! This is so wrong! Their seems few things in this world Serena will never ever permit and losing to Maria ever again is one of those things. So yes, that is a definite possibility. Serena will leave nothing to chance when facing Maria. Given Serena's recent injury, the immediate hyped anticipation, how nervy Serena can be in opening rounds, and Maria literally having nothing to lose(Serena's favorite phrase) the stars could align for Maria.
Re: SERENA vs. MARIAThe stars are aligned. Re: SERENA vs. MARIAThen prepare for Serena's coming announcement! |
