LOL. He's crazy with his rituals and superstitions.

The definitive guide to Rafael Nadal's 19 bizarre tennis rituals

Chris Chase like

Rafael Nadal is a fount of quirks, rituals and idiosyncrasies. While they may look like superstitious peculiarities to an outsider, Nadal insists they’re mechanisms to help him focus on tennis. Here’s a definitive list of Nadal’s 19 tennis tics.

1. Walks on court with a single racket in hand.

2. Crosses lines with his right foot only (and never steps on them if he can avoid it).

He writes about the routine in his 2011 autobiography, Rafa:
Freezing cold water. I do this before every match. It’s the point before the point of no return. Under the cold shower I enter a new space in which I feel my power and resilience grow.
I’m a different man when I emerge. I’m activated. I’m in “the flow”, as sports psychologists describe a state of alert concentration in which the body moves by pure instinct, like a fish in a current. Nothing else exists but the battle ahead.

13. Goes to the towel after every point.

14. Waits for players to cross on changeovers (then steps over the line with the right).

15. He sips the recovery drink.

16. Then sips the water, always in the same order.

17. Then he places them ever-so-delicately in the same exact positions.

Nadal describes this particular ritual:

“I put the two bottles down at my feet, in front of my chair to my left, one neatly behind the other, diagonally aimed at the court. Some call it superstition, but it’s not. If it were superstition, why would I keep doing the same thing over and over whether I win or lose? It’s a way of placing myself in a match, ordering my surroundings to match the order I seek in my head.”

18. Constantly fiddles with his hair and shirt.

19. While changing shirts before, during and after the match, always lingers for an extra beat. Always.

Sure hope he gets GS #20 to tie Roger but trail Serena by 3. This should motivate Roger, Djoko and Serena even more.

Pablo Carreno Busta calls out Novak Djokovic's medical timeout during quarterfinal match

After losing to No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the French Open quarterfinals, Pablo Carreno Busta had some strong words about his opponent and a possible way he tried to get ahead in the match. After falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 to the top ranked player in the world, Carreno Busta suggested the medical timeout taken by Djokovic during the match was more of a play to get ahead than something actually needed for his health.

Djokovic had neck and shoulder injuries heading into the day and after dropping the first set, got treatment for his upper left arm.

Carreno Busta was not silent on how he felt about his opponents medical timeout.

He said:

"He didn't surprise me [by asking for a medical time-out]. It's a good thing. It's a sign that he is losing and that I was playing well, because he always does that. Every time the match gets complicated, he asks for medical assistance. It's something that he has been doing for years. When he is down, he asks for the trainer."

Carreno Busta gave his thoughts on the reasons Djokovic calls such a timeout.

"I don't know, maybe it's the pressure or something that he needs to do it," he said. "But, I mean, he continues playing normal, no? I don't know if he's [in] pain really or [the issue is] mental. Ask him."

Djokovic did address his health but did not give much away.

"I definitely didn't feel great coming onto the court today, a few things happened in the warm-up. I had some neck issues and some shoulder issues. I don't really want to get too much into it," he said. "I'm feeling OK, I'm still in the tournament so I don't want to reveal too much. As the match went on, I felt better, didn't feel as much pain."
