COCO Cocky?
The partisan crowd backed Gauff loudly, chanting, "Let's go, Coco!'' during the final changeover. "This is just the beginning, I promise," she told the crowd afterward. "I'm just so happy that I was able to get through it," Gauff said. "She played amazing. Re: COCO Cocky?I think it means she is greatly aware of the expectations. That pressure is going to test mental strength greatly. Re: COCO Cocky? She simply believes she can play with the big girls. And remember, she is only 15, still a kid. In the post-match interview, the dude said "you are playing Naomi Osaka in the next round". She replied, "what's the question?" lol lol lol.. That says a lot.. I read it like "Yeah, I am playing Naomi so what? You think I should go hiding?" Re: COCO Cocky? You're most definitely NOT alone! Her only claim to this fame is beating Venus, which sadly is more about Venus' legend than her current game. Her people and the media had better hope this isn't a Sprem or Karatentcheva deal when it comes to making your name solely off beating Venus on a "grand" stage. Re: COCO Cocky?McCoco (McNally + Coco) beat Julia Georges in Doubles. The ride continues. Stadium was standing room only. Don't blame the Media for following the story. It's their job. Tomorrow against Osaka, there won't be an empty seat. People will cheer for her even if she is losing 6-0 6-1. She is bringing new fans to tennis, inspiring other kids. WTA needed a story here in the US. Coco is delivering. Her US Open might end Saturday, but she will be doing interviews all over the country the rest of the year. Saturday's result won't matter. Re: COCO Cocky?I think the word you are looking for is creating. Yes, she beat Venus fair and square. However, let's not pretend that the Federer agency PR machine with the help of the media isn't driving this. As I originally stated, she is very aware of the expectations on her in driving this. She will be under extreme pressure and a microscope to deliver. Question is, will she be able to properly develop in this environment? Their is a reason Kobe Bryant's advice for her is to focus on her craft. Hopefully for her sake she'll not be sucked into the hype for the sole purpose of the WTA having a story in the US outside of Serena. Let's not pretend many young stars haven't been crushed under the weight of extreme expectations, let alone now in this social media age. It won't matter if she loses Saturday, for now, but rest assured that goodwill will only last for so long, without bigger/more relevant wins and titles.
