All General Discussion concerning WTA and ATP
Hi all, I have decided not to participate at this year’s Championships at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It’s never an easy decision to take but after listening to my body and discuss it with my team I understand that it is the right decision.
The goal is to prolong my career and continue to do what makes me happy, that is to compete at the highest level and keep fighting for those professional and personal goals at he maximum level of competition.
The fact that there has only been 2 weeks between RG and Wimbledon, didn’t make it easier on my body to recuperate after the always demanding clay court season. They have been two months of great effort and the decision I take is focused looking at the mid and long term.
Sport prevention of any kind of excess in my body is a very important factor at this stage of my career in order to try to keep fighting for the highest level of competition and titles.
Apparently that semifinal loss to Novak at Roland Garros stung a bit more than Nadal is letting on. He was the best of 5 set beast on the red dirt and his stellar record at the French bore that out until Novak, who was admittingly getting closer and closer, finally became the only person in history to beat Nadal twice at The French Open.
That loss literally took the sails out of Nadal's boat and it is now parked in the dock until further notice, undergoing repairs both physical and mental. It will be interesting to see how Nadal rebounds from this devastating loss and performs the rest of the year. Grass is obviously not his favorite surface so that was a foreseeable skip and why risk playing in Tokyo and getting injured or worse ill. Father time is catching up with Nadal, especially considering his physically demanding style of play and injury history, so it will fascinating to see how he emerges and competes the remainder of the year.
