That's true. But it's not only in the medical sectors. Lawsuits are everywhere.
A few years back, a lady spilled hot coffee on herself at McDonald and sued the company. Those are common things. Here we sue anyone, anytime, for anything. You will not see such things in any other country.

A guy hit his friend with a golf ball by accident, when the two were spending good times on the court. One friend was way up there on the court when the other was teeing off. The ball hit his friend in the mouth and he lost a tooth. ouch ouch .... But guess what? he sued his friend. I heard the insurance company demanded he file a police report, etc.
It's crazy.

Grav',

Thank you for your comprehensive response.
We are a "small" country (11 M people), and in the dutch speaking part where I live (approx 65% of the population) we have two main TV-boardcasters (each with different channels) that have a news-program from 7 until 8 pm (more or less). One of the daily re-occuring guests of the last months are expert-virologists who give daily updates, recommendations etc... they have become household names, and it looks as if people take them very seriously, incl our politicians who are listening to them and doing a good job:

* news are reporting on people recovering, and interview them (to show that you can get better), but at the same time these people do tell that it is a serious illness.
These 2 points you made are of extreme significance for your country because what it shows is the cooperative and collaborative efforts on a daily basis by your political establishment, medical agencies and specialists and your visual news media working in unison to address this crisis, resulting in less active cases and reducing the # of deaths ever so slightly, which is buttressed by the article you sent in Dutch, quoting Steven Van Gucht, who represents the scientific committee that monitors the spread of the virus:

"We've got the virus at the neck. "It is the first time since the confirmation of the outbreak that we are seeing a cautious decrease in new confirmed infections and hospitalizations, that's encouraging. But we have to be careful: we don't know yet whether the trend will continue. We have the virus by the neck and it is important not to let go of it."

This quote is also buttressed by the data in the article you sent, as noted:

"A total of 88 deaths were reported, an increase of 13 in the past 24 hours. There are now 401 patients discharged from the hospital and declared cured since 13 March (350 since 15 March)."

This data clearly gives hope and optimism to your citizens that your country is handling this virus nicely by noting that more citizens are recovering than dying and the recoveries are steadily increasing, while the # of active cases and deaths are cautiously decreasing ever so slightly. Lastly, this data from the article reconciles with the data for your country noted in the daily updated John Hopkins U data map, reflected in an aforementioned post......factual reporting.

Point 2:
* Our borders with The Netherlands (who are very relaxed about it, like the UK -they are gonna regret it soon) are now closed, up to the point that roads are blocked with shipping containers. no one gets in/out of Belgium unless really essential.
Blocking roads to and from the Netherlands with shipping containers.........smh. This resembles what happened after the initial outbreak in Wuhan where some of their citizens attempted to flee to other provinces/cities near Wuhan and were met with resistance from vigilantes, men armed with M-16 rifles and other weapons, rocks, etc. to deny entry. However, the point you made about the Netherlands and the UK being relaxed about this issue is supported by the data, relative to this crisis. Per the JHU data map, the Netherlands has 4,474 active cases with the # of deaths at 214 and a very poor recovery stat of only "3", while the UK has 6,724 active cases with 336 people expiring and a negative but positive recovery figure of 140, the positive point is anyone beating the virus. Clearly, those 2 nations are not handling this crisis well, as opposed to other European countries who are now showing greater recovery cases than those who've expired, tho' Spain and Italy are still touch and go, deaths are increasing with recoveries just keeping barely ahead while active cases are continuing to rise. Blocking roads with shipping containers...... Don't know what to say....

Point 3:
* Our government made a deal with the banks, so all loans that companies/individuals need to repay, are frozen for at least 6 months (we helped the banks in 2008, now it is their turn)
* the financially weakest people do not need to pay house rent for the moment
Here in the States, the Treasury Department has extended the tax filing deadline by 4 months (April to July) in response to this crisis.

In addition, the Federal government's housing agencies are extending relief efforts, as well. The President ordered HUD to suspend evictions and foreclosures for 60 days, but it only pertains to homeowners with mortgages with FHA. However, other federal agencies extending mortgage relief initiatives are The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan banks, who are now providing payment forbearance to borrowers impacted by the coronavirus for up to 12 months due to hardship.

Further, individual states are also implementing policy and procedures on relief efforts pertaining to housing with banks and other lenders doing something similar.....

Lastly, telecommunication companies are offering free wi-fi and unlimited data arrangements for their customers, while public utilities are either voluntarily adopting no shutoff procedures or are being ordered to by local government municipalities in response to this crisis, in addition to offering delayed payment arrangements, relative to what state one resides......

Point 4:
What we do see, is the impact of cultural, social behaviour. Mediterranean/ Arab people have a stronger social community with less social distancing, so the odds of infecting each other is bigger. We see that clearly in a specific Belgian province where there are a lot of people from Turkish background (labor migration in the 1960'ies): about 5% of the people have a Turkish background, but they represent 50% of infected people in that area.
The less social distancing amongst the Middle Easterners in your country is not surprising. For one, the Middle Easterners in Belgium and any other European nation are likely the recent migrants from war-torn areas in the ME, like Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, other nations in turmoil, like Turkey, and poor Nations, like Somalia, where people are seeking a better way of life, and for the most part are majority "poor". In every city on this planet, with exceptions, of course, for the most part there are poor communities, so-called middle class communities and greater affluent communities in cities and suburbs. In the poorer communities there are always people teeming in the streets, congregating ere local business establishments (clubs, liquor stores, grocers, etc.), kids playing in playgrounds and in the streets, adults walking to local stores and hauling plastic bags with groceries in return or sitting on front porches in the summer and talking with neighbors and friends and/or those residing in poor housing projects, where one can see people traffic is intense. In suburban communities where there is less high rise apartment dwellings and single family housing with 7,000 sq. footage and higher in individual housing arrangements, one rarely sees people walking about engaging with one another, "quiet" communities no matter the season where adults get into cars and ride to destinations (shopping centers, social engagements, recreational centers) and are engaged in less social contacts with others, outside of personal family and the occasional greet with a neighbor doing yard work or something. In the more affluent communities social distancing is even greater. Thus, the lack of social distancing amongst the so-called poor is not uncommon, regardless of race/ethnicity, while social distancing in more affluent communities is more often a natural way of living, outside of work and/or targeted social engagements.

An aside comment......I watch a lot of transportation videos on YouTube and have noted the tram systems in Brussels amongst many, beautiful trams btw. What I noted is that the passengers on your trams appear to be majority Middle Easterner on one of your lines as it navigated through parts of the city where one can see women in scarfs with kids in tow carrying bags, walking along the streets (active streets with a lot of pedestrian traffic), cheaper looking apartment buildings over store fronts, no single family homes, as well as the men standing and talking in front of stores, walking to destinations, mingling with native Belgians and Africans, I assume, as blacks. As the tram navigated the line and it's underground system, emerging from same, it emerged to a more affluent boulevard setting with rich-looking apartment buildings about 3 to 4 stories high and connected like row housing and where I notice very little pedestrian walking traffic and literally no Middle Easterners and Africans. My assumption is that the city is segregated by race/ethnics and economics. Is this true?

Nevertheless, referencing your last sentence, retro to the 60's it appears that Turkish migrants and other recent migrants from the ME are not prospering in Belgium and massed in ethnic areas where social distancing is least, given rise to your last statement that 50% of the infected people with Covid-19 comes from that community.......not surprising, tho' the virus is not discriminatory, seeing that some members of the House and Senate in the States are infected, a high ranking member of the Iranian government has died from the virus, a member of the Brazilian gov't, who met Trump at Mara-lago became infected, the wife of the Prime Minister in Canada, as well as prominent entertainers, well-off NBA ballers and other athletes have come down with the virus......

Thank you for your response and insight on what's happening in Belgium, Grav'...... Learned a lot and most appreciative how your home land is handling this crisis....

Great reading you guys :)

Trump closed down Mar-A-Lago a few weeks ago and fired all his employees. He better not have his money grubbing hands on that $2T relief package (he wants to control $500B without any reporting strings - Hell NO)!!

Yes, Grosse, he wants to rush people back to work before containing and understanding this virus ~ Big mistake and it won't happen. It's just talk (lies) to relieve and influence Wall Street, his donors and dumbass followers. DonTheCon!!

BTW, a man died by using cleaning strength Chloroquine, and his wife is still critical. If AG Barr was up to the task and legit, DJT would be charged with negligent homicide!! So irresponsible for him to declare it a cure before the proper clinical tests were done and FDA approved. CEOs have gone to jail and fined for less.

On a better note, the Tennis Channel is doing a GOAT Countdown from 100 - 1 :)

Stay safe!!

Merck's Vioxx:

I tracked adverse events and each report had to be answered by our properly disciplined physician and sent to the FDA within 24hrs. The best drugs may have one weekly for silly things like taking the wrong dosage, but they can get very serious and life threatening!!

For Vioxx, we received dozens daily **CAUTION** but they allowed it to persist for years … I was out of there!!

In 1999 I went out on stress and never returned, knowing a catastrophe was brewing!! In 2004, when they finally pulled it off the market and were fighting thousands of lawsuits (including mine), they fired the CEO and upper management (FDA fined also) and laid off thousands of employees (friends)!!

That's what they get for messing with DJ :P
