Respecting this draw, Ben Rothenberg projects Serena's run to the title:

R1: Bye R2: Azarenka R3: Muguruza R4: Bertens QF: Stephens SF: Halep F: Osaka

Venus faces Petkovic in the lst. If she prevails, she gets Petra K.

Rough stuff for the Sisters.....

True... it's rough for the sisters.
I like Halep's draw. She should make the SF.

Yes, Simona's draw is weak.....

Quick revenge matches for two:

If Kris gets by Saisa Zheng.....Naomi v Kristina Mladenovic, who dismissed Naomi at Dubai......

Sofia Kenin gets a replay of the Acapulco final versus Yafan Wang in the lst.....

Kuzmova could do some damage here if she gets control of the UEs.. That's a big 'IF'

I've seen in different places that fans think that Serena has a difficult draw. Yet when I saw it, I thought that the third quarter looked rather easy for both Serena and Mertens to meet in the QF.

Serena may have Azarenka in her opening match, but the current Azarenka is only difficult for mediocre players; She is nowhere near her peak form of years ago. And the same for Muguruza and Bertens: the way they've been playing recently, they should be no problem for Serena (I assume that Serena will be playing decent tennis; if she has issues too, then any draw would be hard).

First quarter is a big opportunity for Bencic. I am not convinced that Osaka and Pliskova will do well. Defending this title is a big test for Naomi, first time that she enters an event with 1000 points that needs defending.

Q2 and Q4 are tough, imo. Kvitova getting Venus in opener, then Pavs in R3, followed by Keys, and then probably Sabalenka or Kerber. And at that point in time, she only got to the SF...

On tennisforum it is also a head-line: tough draw for Serena because of Azarenka....
Azarenka is W:L 3-4, and that includes a R1 loss at the AO against a player outside the top100.

If that is tough for Serena, then it is time to lower expectations, because the current top20 is vastly superior to Azarenka v.2019...

7 Bertens vs BYE
Martic vs Linette
Konta vs Parmentier
BYE vs 27 Hsieh
20 Muguruza vs BYE
Schmidelova vs WC Davis
Azarenka vs Lapko
BYE vs 10 Serena
That's a tough draw for Serena by any measure. Azarenka is a top player. We know what she is capable of. If Serena survives that, she's got Muguruza around the corner, who's also a top player. Then Bertens, who's been playing well.
So yes, compared to other top players like Halep, Osaka, Pliskova, who are not facing any top player, any slam winner, Serena's draw is rough.

Azarenka WAS a top player... not anymore; #48, despite having played a full tour (16 events). This year, lost R1 AO to a player outside the top100, has a negative win-loss ratio in 2019, so far collected 126 ranking points in 4 events.
Serena - on the other hand, got 430 points (in one event), in 2019, and is ranked in the top 10 by playing half a tour (collected her points in 8 events).

I would not even be surprised to see Azarenka lose in R1....
Again, if Serena loses to Azarenka, her form is not worth a top10-ranking.

We will talk again after R2: I predict Azarenka losing in R1 or losing badly in R2. Probably the weakest opponent that Serena faced recently.
