What is there to complain?

Every non-seeded gets a seeded player in R1 or R2 (not in both).
Venus happens to get one who has not won a single match on clay in 2019, and who actually won no match in more than two months...

And STILL you complain :-) :-)

Always have to find something to complain about!

Could've been worse for Venus. This is a match that could go either way.
1-1 h2h Funny enough, Venus' win came on clay.

Good luck to Venus! :)

Elina Svitolina on facing Venus Williams at French Open, her injury battle and Gael Monfils

I grew up on clay courts in Ukraine and playing on the surface is almost like playing at home - so that's why Roland Garros is my favourite Grand Slam.

But in the first round I've probably got one of the toughest draws I could have got - Venus Williams.

I also started my title defence at the Italian Open in Rome against Victoria Azarenka so it is another tough draw.

I don't know why I got this punishment!

I was actually talking recently with Gael about drawing Venus, about drawing someone who is a great champion, a legend of our sport and has won seven Grand Slams.

Gael told me it would be quite some draw for someone - and now I'm playing her. It's so funny!

She's a role model for many athletes and girls in general, both her and Serena, what they do for our sport is great. They are still competing, Serena coming back after having a baby, they are still top players.

You need to have lots of willpower to keep coming back and having such a great and long career.

I have played her a couple of times, and Serena as well, and as I know a little more about this experience, I'm more relaxed and focusing on what I'm doing and what is in my power.

You have to be ready mentally and physically when you're playing one of the world's greats.

I really don't understand why Venus is still playing competitive tennis.
Her unforced errors are so bad. She tends to DF when facing break points... Her game is just not there for higher competition.

I really don't understand why Venus is still playing competitive tennis.
Maybe because she likes it and it's good money? Venus has nothing left to prove. Yes,
she is a shadow of herself as a player, but still good enough to be sparingly competitive
and get some quality wins. Their is about 95% of the tour that would kill to be the shell
of what Venus was today. Whatever her motivations, I hate seeing her lose like this, but
if she's content, that's all that matters.

Wimbledon here we come. I do hope she'll play a grass warm-up, but knowing Venus
I won't hold my breath.

Mytiwtiw, comforting to know Venus has good company on the sidelines. ;)

That's like Jordan trying to play for the Chicago Bulls or Navratilova getting back on the tour.
They love their sport, but they are no longer competitive, that's when they have to leave it.
Pretty soon, Venus loves the sport so much she'll be playing Qualifiers.

that's when they have to leave it
You have to understand that different people have different motivations. Serena herself said that if she was
dealing with what Venus was in terms of her illness, she'd retire first. Translation, if she could not be that
Slam winning Serena, the motivation to continue would not be there. I think it is hard for fans and great
players in general to be past their prime and often compared to what they used to be. And many/most
do just retire and move on. However, that doesn't mean they have. Especially in an individual sport
like tennis. And while Venus' Slam winning days are most likely behind her, she is still a force. She
can still offer up surprises on grass and hardcourts. QF and 4th rd of Indian Wells and Miami with a
win over AO runner-up Kvitova means Venus still has some gas in the tank. Also, let's not kid ourselves
that Venus couldn't still pull many WC's on star power alone(if her ranking slipped further). This afterall
is still a business and their are many worldwide that love to see Venus.

Venus will do as Venus sees fit.
