So Simona withdrew (due to her back injury - as expected), so we know the field:
Wozniacki
Kerber
Osaka
Kvitova
Stephens
Svitolina
Pliskova
Bertens

Sevastova is locked as an alternate. Second spot is for Sabalenka at the moment, but could go to Kasatkina if she wins Moscow.

Watched the first match... Svitolina prepared herself for this event and went into hiding for it...

Svitolina at her best (and Kvitova... well,... better luck in next matches)

Snoozefest except for the star power of Naomi, and guess why she's the biggest star attraction there?

Petra saved by the net twice....

Woz was serving for the first set at 5-3, and twice Petra hit the net-cord, forcing Woz to last-second adaptations, and twice we saw Petra hitting a winner in the next shot.

Petra should have lost this set.

Woz takes the first set after all, 7-5...
Kvitova: the better player, but also the one making (too many) errors...

I may end up with a 5th loss in a row in this YEC....

Anyone ever ended with zero points after predicting every match? Smile

For me, the YEC is a nice warm-up for a great Zhuhai event: the names in that event look more promising to me Smile

Stephens is the first to break... *3-2...
Rooting for Sloane here. She really has been playing well here in Singapore.

Stephens about to serve for 6-2, but is is closer as it seems...

BP conversion says it all:
Kerber: 0/7 (BPs in several games, none converted)
Stephens 2/2

Stephens failing to capitalise at 5-2... 40-15 (2 SP), another at Ad and missing an unmissable winner, and then getting broken.

5-3*...

Stephens' break point conversion is perfect: 3/3 ... wins the first set 6-3
