Wow....This tournament actually spread out the talent! Top half (based on form only) Sloane or Garcia should get through with the major edge going to Sloane should she get past Keys in likely the 4th rd, which she will...Bottom half( based on form only) Watson will likely get past Townsend, Osaka should get past her matches as she really doesn't have a lot of players that can trouble her, Kvitova has a tougher portion of the draw with Siniakova or Kr Pliskova but she should get through. But...later down the line she may have to play Osaka who is playing some of the best tennis of her young career. I pick: Osaka to get through but not by much if the two players should meet.

#ed_op#font color="brown"#ed_cl#@ #ed_op#b#ed_cl#BJM123#ed_op#/b#ed_cl#:#ed_op#/font#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl# #ed_op#br#ed_cl#You got a lot of confidence in Osaka (because of IW, I assume)... but this is clay-season, and her record on clay on the WTA-tour is not that amazing:#ed_op#br#ed_cl#In 2016-2017 combined, she has a W:L record of 4:6 on clay, and several times she did not get through quaifying too...#ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl#In her quarter, on the other hand, are several players that have had (very) good results on clay:#ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl#R2 possibly Siegemund, winner of Stuttgart (on clay) last year and Bastad on cay in 2016, Also won 11 ITF-titles, ALL on clay. On top of that, she had an easy win vs Osaki in Rome (clay) last year.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#R3: Goerges (former winner of Stuttgart too, also Badgastein on clay) or Stosur  #ed_op#br#ed_cl#QF: title defender Kastkina...#ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl#So no, I will be surprised to see Osaka in the final stages (SF and beyond) of this event. Also because this is a 64-draw; six matches to be played in seven days, no rest between rounds, overall longer matches, and harder to blow away an opponent.#ed_op#br#ed_cl#It would be a huge success to get past Siegmund in R2, given the latter her results on this surface.#ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl##ed_op#br#ed_cl#

It's always obvious that if Jabeur can't win in 2 sets, forget it.
When I saw the scoreboard, I knew all Gavrilova had to do is win the 2nd set and Jabeur would go away. :)

More interested in Naomi and Zanevska...
For Naomi, just curious about how she'll perform now that the spotlights are on her.
For Zanevska, I want to know how her big game plays on the Green Clay against decent players. This is no ITF jungle where anybody can munch on anybody in the middle of nowhere any time of the day.

Sloane withdrew.

Naomi wins in 2 with 6-4 scores. Jennifer Brady hits big. Serve is big time and her forehand does massive damage. Backhand isn't bad either. Has the dropper. Just has to put the package together to make a name for herself. Definitely not a scrub ranked in the 80's.

Hercog retruns Zaneveska to the ITF circuit, 6-1 6-4. Z' was up in the 4th 4-1 ere Polona recovered, then sent her on her way to the next event. Polona's tats have got to go.......

Zanevska is out.. 1-6 4-6 ... was up 4-1 in the 2nd.. lost 5 games in a row.
maybe she is one of these big ballers who can't do jack on clay. :)
Got to learn to be patient on that stuff.

Naomi held steadily since that first game. Nice to see. I read she was more patient than the natural pushers. Nice way to adjust.
But now she is facing darling Siegemund, a clay specialist armed with all kinds of drop shots. Not gonna be easy.

Graveller:

I have a lot of confidence in Osaka because she's shown that she's playing a lot better than she did. Her record on clay was before she really started to come into her own. I think that she's a different player now.

She could get past Siegemund even if it's clay but I do like Siegmund and she's underrated! Goerges is another great player but sometimes her mental progress is what's lacking. Kasatkina has a beautiful game but if Osaka can keep her pinned like she did last time, she will win. This is a very workable draw for her but once she gets past Siegmund, she will loosen up even more.
