Wimbledon 2018: Venus Williams battles from a set down to beat Johanna Larsson in round one
The five-time SW19 champion lost the opening set tie-break before exploding into life in the final two sets

By Dave Fraser
VENUS WILLIAMS battled from a set down to beat Johanna Larsson in round one at Wimbledon, eventually winning 6-7 (3) 6-2 6-1.

The pair had only faced each other once before - with Williams taking that match 6-3 7-5 in the 2013 Fed Cup.

But the Swede star, 29, was in no mood to go down without a fight on the glorious grass of Wimbledon.

Larsson battled hard to take the first set, clinching it in a tense tie break 7-6 (3) in the baking sunshine at SW19 - with both players breaking serve three times.

Ever the fighter, veteran world No9 Williams, 38, broke early in the second set to swing the momentum back in her favour.

Another break in the seventh game gave the American star a 5-2 lead and the chance to serve to take it into a third set - which she took with aplomb, to love.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Williams wasted no time in the battle for power in the third set, either.

She took advantage of some poor Larsson serving to break in the first game - with the Swede visibly frustrated, throwing her racket to the turf and smacking a ball into the crowd.

Williams took advantage of a rattled Larsson, breaking again in her very next service game before holding for 4-0 as she cruised to victory.

The American superstar went on take the final set 6-1 - following an flurry of breaks - to book her place in the second round.

Can't stand forehand slicers like this Maria girl that beat Svitolina.
I was rooting for Svitolina to find a way to get rid of her.
Can you believe watching this Maria lady playing Niculescu? You wouldn't pay me enough to sit and watch that match. :) :) :) Ugly forehands slices all match long from both players? hell no, thanks.
