New, Improved MONFILS? Should We Believe?
He said he was badly hampered by a knee injury all of last year after reaching a career high of #6 in 2016. My personal feelings are that he's not as confident as he tries to project and as he gets close to proving his potential, he falters. I believe the French thinking is not great at instilling a killer's instinct in players. They all seem really emotional and overthink. When he gets nervous, the clown comes out. Lisiki starts grinning weirdly when she's facing break point or match point, all to assuage or mask the fear. Should We Believe?I agree with you totally about the clown aspect and lack of killer instinct. He has not had success in the slams because he doesn't really apply himself and he doesn't know how to win even when things aren't going his way. Gasquet and Tsonga are the same way but in different variations. They all have the athleticism and shots but they are severely lacking in mental capacity. Monfils will not win a slam and he just now realizes that he should have been serious all along. |
