ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza is the WTA Player of the Year, and U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens is the Comeback Player of the Year.

The women's tennis tour announced the annual honors on Friday. The awards are voted on by members of the media.

Other recipients include French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko as Most Improved Player, CiCi Bellis as Newcomer of the Year, and Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-Jan as Doubles Team of the Year.

I don't think there is a player to be named 'Player Of the Year'.
No one played well from start to finish.

Svitolina

Player of the year = getting consistent results throughout the year (i.e., not only in slams; if that is the criteria, then name it Player of the Slams)

Svitolina got into the top 5 without a deep run at a slam; that means that she managed to get a lot of points without the inflated amount of points that are gifted at a slam. Only possible when you get deep into the draw week-after-week

No, she is not the most exciting/powerful/charismatic player. But she had the most consistent year imo. And won the most titles by far (incl three P5s, so not limited to MM events).
So give her the POTY title: the others would only get it as a result of playing well in 4-5 weeks....

(OK, I could live with Halep, but only if she wins the YEC)

Another argument for Svitolina: she and Wozniacki are the only ones with more than 50 wins in 2017 so far:
Svitolina (18 events):52-12 W:L, 5 titles
Wozniacki (22 events): 56-20 W:L, 1 title

No definitive player of the year. Although, if Garbine were able to win, I would give it to her because she's won a grand slam and got to number 1. This would solidify that.

But I think Wozniacki and Halep have been the most consistent.

They should figure out a way to determine when a player over-performs or plays their best to date, and then see which player is usually the opponent or in the draw. That player is the POY.
