1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIA
Not too long ago, in a galaxy far far away, this match would've been a semi-final or final. My my my how times and players have changed. Serena is now a mother and Sharapova is trying to stage a comeback from a multitude of things. For Serena this would be just another dismantling of Sharapova and another win in their lopsided head to head if she's victorious. For Sharapova a win, in what is the biggest first round match of the tournament on Ashe in primetime night one, would give her a major confidence boost, some revenge, and be a brightspot in her floundering tennis career. Sharapova would instantly be the talk and toast of the town as I believe only one other player has knocked Serena out of a major in the first round. I just hope it's a fairly decent match and not a blowout AND WE HAVE NO DRAMA!!! I'm sure the stadium will be packed for this match and it will be interesting to see who the crowd will be rooting for. Re: 1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIAYeah, wait for Tuesday night, Twit Re: 1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIAIt's too early to smoke that thing.
Re: 1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIAIf Maria had any class and decency, she'd surrender her two wins from 2004 back to Serena and apologize. Re: 1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIA“She’s such a good player,” Williams told ESPN of Sharapova after the 59-minute victory. “When you play her, you have to be super focused. So every time I come up against her, I just bring out some of my best tennis.”
Re: 1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIAWell, someone almost got the scoreline correct - just not the winner. No need to pretend Serena. Sharapova is far from being a good player these days. Mediocre maybe. In fairness, I will say that any player on the tour is a "good" player in that sense, but when you compare to the competition on the deep end, Maria is no longer "good". Hard to see her finding her way back to top flight competition.
Re: 1ST RD: SERENA vs. MARIA"Bottom line is I believe in my ability," said Sharapova, who has slipped to 87th in the world rankings after another season marred by injury. "You can write me off. There are many people that can write me off, especially after going down 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open. As long as it's not the person that's inside of you, you'll be OK." |
