Shocking victory. My advice, take the money and run into retirement asap and take care of your family. Don't get greedy. I'm not hopeful nonetheless.

WADA testing comparisons 2019, 2020, 2021

WADA publishes global testing figures showing return to normal levels despite COVID-19

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is pleased to note that the number of samples collected by Anti-Doping Organizations (ADOs) around the world is quickly returning to normal despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The latest testing figures, outlined in the tables below, reveal that in March 2021, 22,649 samples were collected by 145 ADOs, the highest number of samples recorded since the pandemic started in March 2020.

While sample numbers were considerably down in the early months of the pandemic, especially from March to June 2020, testing increased steadily after that. In fact, the level of out-of-competition samples in the first three months of 2021 is more than 2019 levels for the same period.

WADA attributes a return to normal levels of out-of-competition sample collection in 2021 to:

The strict health-focused guidance that the Agency developed in collaboration with ADOs and the World Health Organization for all sample-collection procedures and first published in March 2020 with updates in May and November; and
The roll-out of COVID-19 vaccination programs globally, which are also assisting in ensuring that the number of samples collected increases as we head into the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
As it relates to in-competition samples collected, the limited number of sporting competitions that took place in 2020, which normally make up around 45-50% of total sample numbers, had a considerable impact on the number of in-competition samples collected in 2020. This remains the case in 2021 as the number of events taking place is still comparatively low.

WADA President Witold Bańka said: “WADA’s number-one priority remains public safety. The anti-doping community is getting through this pandemic and making sure that the system is returning to full power as quickly and safely as possible. WADA is monitoring the integrity of anti-doping testing worldwide in light of the pandemic and is providing support and advice to Anti-Doping Organizations and athletes on an ongoing basis.

“Out-of-competition testing is now fully back. In fact, there were 2,000 more such tests carried out in March 2021 than in the same month in 2019. This is a tribute to the hard work, dedication and ingenuity of Anti-Doping Organizations, and WADA wishes to commend them and athletes for the commitment and flexibility that they have shown throughout the pandemic.

“Of course, it is not all about testing. As the global anti-doping system continues to reopen, the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) is a key tool, as is long-term sample storage, education and intelligence and investigations. As we look ahead to the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, WADA is doing everything it can to encourage and support Anti-Doping Organizations worldwide to use all tools at their disposal in order to ensure the best possible anti-doping programs.”

As regards Tokyo, WADA is, in particular, supporting the work of the Pre-Games Testing Group, which is coordinated by the International Testing Agency (ITA) on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and which aims to ensure that all athletes competing at the Olympic Games have been subject to a suitable level of testing in the lead-up to the Games. WADA also supports the implementation of the long-term sample storage facility and program – funded by the IOC and delivered by the ITA – where International Federations and National Anti-Doping Organizations can have samples they collected from athletes prior to the Olympic Games and who participate in the Games stored for up to 10 years at no cost to them, for possible further analysis in the future. In addition, the Agency is working to ensure that the WADA-accredited laboratory in Tokyo will be ready for the challenge that awaits it. WADA will also have an Independent Observer team present in Tokyo to monitor the anti-doping activities at the Olympic Games and work in partnership with the IOC, the ITA and the organizing committee to ensure the most effective anti-doping program is delivered. WADA will provide more information on its activities related to the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in the coming weeks.

Olympics-Athletics: Italy Olympics chief blasts Jacobs doping suspicions

Image

Doping suspicions aimed at Italy's 100 metres Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs are embarrassing and unpleasant, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) president Giovanni Malago said on Tuesday.

Jacobs claimed a stunning gold on Sunday, setting a European record time of 9.80 seconds in the showcase final in Tokyo despite having not gone under 10 seconds until this year.

However, the 26-year-old's unexpected victory resulted in the Washington Post writing that "the history of track and field casts suspicion on sudden and immense improvement", a reference to previous doping cases.

"Jacobs deserves the benefit of the doubt, but his sport does not," the article added.

The Times wrote that athletics' dark history with doping "means the arrival of any new star will alert the more sceptical".

But Malago blasted any suggestion of wrongdoing.

"The remarks of some of your colleagues are a source of great regret and embarrassment from every point of view," Malago told Rai Radio 1.

"We are talking about athletes, in this case, who are subjected to systematic and daily anti-doping checks.

"When you set a national or even continental record that number doubles, so much so that he said the number of checks was impressive.

"It is truly something unpleasant, it shows how some are not able to accept defeat."

Jacobs was one of several high-profile athletes to wear new running spikes featuring "performance-enhancing" carbon soles as he won gold.

Athletes in Tokyo have also praised a fast track that has produced a host of world, continental and national records from sprint to middle distances.

100M Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs' ex-nutritionist linked to steroid probe in Italy

TOKYO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Italy's double Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs said on Saturday he had split from his former nutritionist once he heard that Giacomo Spazzini was allegedly being investigated for a connection with performance-enhancing substances.

Jacobs has been one of the Tokyo Games revelations, becoming the first Italian ever to win the 100 metres sprint at an Olympics Games, racing to victory with a European record time of 9.80 seconds in the showcase final in Tokyo despite having not gone under 10 seconds until this year.

He was also part of the winning 4x100 metres relay team for a stunning sprint double, with Italy already earning more medals in Tokyo than in any other summer Olympics and with a day of competition still left.

"Well, this is something that honestly, I am not involved with, because from the very first moment we heard about this thing that happened, we stopped working with him," Jacobs told reporters when asked about Spazzini.

"But we are not worried, in fact the person was involved in a situation which was not his fault. At the end of the situation he was not considered guilty, so we are relaxed about it."

Italian media have reported that the pair split in March when the first reports surfaced of Spazzini's alleged involvement.

A spokesman for the Milan police said an investigation involving Spazzini was launched in 2019 and subsequently concluded, and the prosecutors now needed to decide whether and how to proceed with the case. The spokesman said he could not comment on the nature of the allegations.

Earlier this week the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) blasted suggestions in the media that cast doubt on Jacobs's victory in the 100 metres, saying the reports were "embarrassing and unpleasant".

Jacobs, who said his and Italy's success on the track was down to hard work, was one of several high-profile athletes to wear new running spikes featuring "performance-enhancing" carbon soles en route to his gold medals.

Athletes in Tokyo have also praised a fast track that has produced a host of world, continental and national records from sprint to middle distances.

"Well, what can I say? We have been working so hard for so long," Jacobs said.

"We are working on this relay since many years back and the big idea of the coach was that in the future we can make a successful quartet and now we are in that moment -- and we were finally able to do it.

"We were able to create a compact team, who were able to come with me on this beautiful journey, and here we are with these two gold medals," he said.

Italy have so far earned 38 medals, with their previous best being 36 from the Games in Rome in 1960 and Los Angeles in 1932.

They won 28 medals at the London 2012 Olympics and the same number at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics five years ago.
