PGame 2020 newsfeed

Post by Graveller » Jan Sun 12, 2020 1:40 pm

Decided to create a thread on PGame news and results for the whole year. I cannot promise weekly updates, but will do my best.
Feel free to join in whenever you want :-)

Results of first week of the twenties:
1) Ace2Ace was the first one to win an event in this year/decade: WTA Shenzen International. First time for him to win here.

2) Serenarulz09 wins a first event since Eastbourne 2016. Almost 4 years ago (that year Serenarulz09 won 9 WTA-events, incl. the Australian Open, Miami and Rome). And comes more than a decade after the first title in Warsaw, 2009. The current title at WTA Premier Brisbane was career victory #27...

3) Jeff in Texas was the most successful one this week: Two titles: winner in WTA Auckland, and Co-winner in ATP Doha. And it is worth mentioning that he now won 3 Auckland titles in a row!

4) Finally, Graveller was the other co-winner in ATP-Doha.

So these four already managed to win an event in this new year. But I am pretty sure that the test will follow.

In the last week before the AO, we have 4 events, nicely split over WTA and ATP.
Alelaide is new, but as it is the continuation of Sydney, I decided to merge the H.O.F. for Sydney and Adelaide...

Premier Sydney/Adelaide is one of the events that has been played here since the start in 2002. But it is remarkable that there are 16 unique winners: no one ever managed to win it twice. From the Players that entered this year so far, the following participants could become #17: CrossCourtBH, Perdida, Pyotr, Wannadoo75. (The 5 other ones could become the first player with multiple titles here). Title defender is Graveller.

Hobart/Gold Coast is another of those events that is on the PGame Calender since 2002, but was not played always (only 13 times). Title defender is Rex.

ATP250 Sydney/Adelaide has also been tough to win twice; only ATP-expert Ace2Ace managed to do so :-) . This year, the job to defend the title is for two people: Graveller and Perdida

The fourth event is ATP250 Auckland. The one who has to defend here has not been seen on the site for a while, namely Themo, so it looks like we will have a different winner this year.

The AO has started, but still some time to look back at last week.

Big winner was Wannadoo75 with three victories:
ATP250 Adelaide (formerly Sydney)
ATP250 Auckland: after winnning this event in 2012 and 2015, he adds a third Auckland-crown to his collection
WTA Premier Adelaide (formerly Sydney): here, the curse of the event remains alive: no one ever won Sydney/Adelaide twice, and that has not changed in 2020 as Wannadoo75 becomes the 17th winner of this event.

The one event that he missed out was WTA International Hobart. Jeff in Texas took this one, making it his second win on the PGame WTA-tour this year. It his the second time (after 2017) that Jeff wins here.

Looking at the WTA Australian Open, we have two title defenders: Jeff in Texas and Rex. Most of the current participants have won this slams at least once (missing on the list are Pyotr and CrossCourtBH). In the past, two titles were won by Ace2Ace, Moasey, Rex and Wannadoo75.
On the ATP-side, it is Jeff in Texas again who has to do the defending. The only two players who won the ATP-slam twice are Cibulkova and Wannadoo75. And a lot of familiar names are missing from this HOF: Ace, CrossCourt, Graveller, Perdida, Rex, Pyotr... I think that it is time for a new winner :-)

Or will Jeff in Texas surprise us all and to the double back-to-back??? We'll know in two weeks time...

We do not know yet who will win the ATP PGame for the Australian Open, but in WTA we have - just like in reality - a first time WTA slam winner: PYOTR!!!

Congratulations on your first WTA-slam.

I did not forget the ATP :-)

As Pyotr already indicated, the ATP-winner in australia was Jeff in Texas. He successfully defended that title, and now has won four of the last six ATP-slams. Thumbs up!!

This week, there are three title defenders in ATP (no WTA events):
Graveller defends Cordoba (in Argentina)
Perdida defends Pune/Chennai (the indian ATP250)
Pyotr defends a title in Montpellier

We will know more in three days!!

ps: Wannadoo is leading in the ATP PGame rolling ranking (with 112 points ahead of Rex), and needs 11 more weeks to get to 470 weeks in total (since early 2009); that equals NINE years at #1 !!!!
Rex will need miracles in the coming two months to close that gap and stop the dominance.

on second place in the all-time #1-ranking is Jeff in Texas with a total of 42 weeks...

Woohoo! I didn't realize that I had done that well in slams! Now, if I could only find the magic for smaller tourneys...

I can't wait more than two weeks before an update, or it becomes too much :-)
So what happened in the two post-slam weeks? Well, most action was in ATP with six events (and only two in WTA).

Only one player managed to be sucessful in both tours (ATP & WTA): CrossCourtBH, winning Hua Hin (WTA Int.) and Pune (ATP250). CCBH was leading the pack in Asia :-)
The second WTA-event went to Perdida, winning Premier St.Petersburg.

The dominating force in ATP was Rex with 3 titles: ATP250 Montpellier (2nd win here after 2014), ATP250 Cordoba and ATP500 Rotterdam (co-winner). The latter event is one that suits Rex as he now won this trophy 5 times!
Wannadoo75 was the other co-winner in ATP500 (2nd win here), and he was also co-winner in ATP250 Buenos Aires - sharing the trophy with Pyotr (who was title defender and managed to remain the champion).

Just like Rex and Wannadoo75, Pyotr was not satisfied with one title, so he added ATP250 New York to his growing collection (28 ATP-titles since 2012).

The next summary will be in two weeks, when I will give the results of 3 WTA and 6 ATP events (ses below, together with title defenders and most successful players):
WTA Dubai (Premier event in 2020): Title defender is Jeff in Texas (2-time winners are Graveller, Mytiwtiw and Serenarulz)
WTA Doha (P5 in 2020): Title defenders are Graveller and Mytiwtiw (Most titles for Graveller: 4 (2013, 2015, 2016, 2019)
WTA Acapulco (Int.): Title defender is Ace2Ace, the only one who ever won the event more than once (2017, 2019) despite being on the PGame calendar since 2002.
ATP500 Rio de Janeiro: Title defender is Jeff in Texas (2-time winner is Pingpong0_)
ATP250 Delray Beach: Title defender is Rex (no multiple winners here so far)
ATP250 Marseille: Title defender is Perdida (2-time winner is Rex; 2014 and 2016)
ATP500 Dubai: Title defender is Wannadoo75 (2-time winners in the past are Graveller, Serenarulz09, Wannadoo75)
ATP500 Acapulco: Title defender is Graveller (going for his 4th title after 2012, 2014 and 2019)
ATP250 Santiago: Looks like a new event, but we used to have Vina del Mar in the past (the unofficial Sea-resort of Santiago), so it makes sense to join both HOF's. In that case the 2014-title defender is Graveller.

So the pressure is on Graveller (3 titles to defend + 2 events where a 4th/5th title can be won) and Jeff in Texas (2 titles to defend).
