Painful loss for Serena, she had the match a couple times.

Blow to women tennis for Wimbledon, she was their biggest draw.

Drama....

Harmony Tan's doubles partner angered at her withdrawal: 'I didn't deserve that'
Tan is withdrawing due to thigh injury suffered in her victory over Serena Williams

A day after eliminating Serena Williams from Wimbledon in her debut at the grass-court Grand Slam, Harmony Tan surprised and angered her doubles partner by withdrawing from that tournament on Wednesday with a thigh injury.

Tan, a Frenchwoman ranked 115th who beat the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) on Centre Court on Tuesday, was scheduled to team with Tamara Korpatsch for their opening doubles match on Wednesday.

"She just texted this morning. Let me wait here 1 hour before the match start," Korpatsch wrote in an Instagram post. "I’m very sad, disappointed and also very angry that I can’t play my 1st Doubles Grand Slam.

"And it’s really not fair for me ... I didn’t deserve that."

Tan is scheduled to play No. 32 Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the second round of the singles tournament on Thursday. Sorribes Tormo advanced by defeating American qualifier Christina McHale 6-2, 6-1.

Tsurenko wins all-Ukraine match and backs Wimbledon ban for Russians
Tsurenko into third round after beating Kalinina 3-6, 6-4, 6-3
‘I have heard only from one Belarusian and one Russian’

________________________
The Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko said she backs Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian players from this year’s tournament after she was met with “silence” on the invasion of her home country by people she considered friends.

Speaking after the match, the 33-year-old said she agreed with the ban. “It’s just a step,” she said. “[But] it’s a good step to show that that’s what we all have to do. I am Ukrainian. There is no other opinion in my head.”

Tsurenko said that in other circumstances she might have supported the inclusion of Russian and Belarusian players in the competition. “I would be the first one to say that, no, you should not ban them. But I have heard only from one Belarusian player and from one Russian player, who talked to me personally and told me: ‘I’m against the war.’

“I have heard one Belarusian and one Russian player. I did not hear anything from any other player,” Tsurenko said, as her voice began to be affected by her emotions. “So for me, the silence means … I mean, it’s not good when … I don’t know. I thought I had a lot of friends on tour, especially from Russians and Belarusians.”

The bottom section is really wide open: great opportunity for some of these players to grab a (first) spot in the final with only two slam-winners in there (Kerber and Ostapenko).

Watched Garcia vd Raducanu yesterday on BBC, and Garcia looked solid. so based on these results (and results of last week), I kinda hope for a semi-final between Garcia and Ostapenko.

I should root for compatriot Mertens, but not holding much hope for her.

I believe Cornet, the women have tacitly agreed amongst themselves to keep Covid+ results or symptoms a secret and keep playing.
