Cleveland 250k event

Post by rex » Aug Sun 22, 2021 12:37 pm

Just a note on the pavilion. Per the video stream, the stadia sits next to a river, where one can hear the tugs going by blowing their horns. The main court is nice for tennis with a canvas overhang covering the court and most of the stands, which are a combination of bench and individual chair seats but if it rains you'll still have to delay the match, for it's not enclosed. Looks to seat between 5k-7k(?) by appearance, which is more than decent for a first-time, 250k event in Cleveland. Right now, watching the match between Alexandrova and Begu, who both are sweating profusely due to high temps. But, the overhang blocks the sun so players won't be toasted at least and likely won't need a heat break. Nice facility and I can see down the road that Cleveland will come into play as an added addition to the Stateside part of the season ere the USO and can be upgraded to a 500k at some point given this facility. Haven't seen as yet the other courts here, but the main court is very good. Good on the city of Cleveland for providing a more than decent venue for the ladies.

Camera shots outside of the pavilion show a river with individuals kayaking and paddleboarding and a panoramic view of the city skyline to a point.

WTA website on this event is tragic, tho', lacking any information about the tennis site. The overview is blank.

After her win, Begu made some appreciative comments on the facility and the crowd attendance. Likely, word will spread on this event amongst the players and we'll see higher ranked players wanting to play there, upgrading the event to a 500k down the road.

Well.....the outer courts are located on a corner block, separated by a covered fence. Bleachers practically don't exist but cameras are in use, no line judges. Nothing separates the courts but space. Ball retrievers are a mix of kids and granddads. Yet, it's a start for Cleveland and the main court is top-notch.

Congrats to Anett for winning the inaugural event in Cleveland, an event that will be a mainstay for the Tour from hereon. She and Irina played a competitive match before a very good crowd in the final.
