In the PGame: Last year winner was Graveller.

No one ever won the event twice.

the loss of my uWP Bencic in her R1, together with Sabalenka going out early was a bad waking up....
But Mertens and Rybakina moving into the QF compensated for that :-) . And one will move into the SF as they meet in the next round. Difficult to pick one. Brain says Mertens, but I want Rybakina to win: she needs a win to get into the top32 (and seeded status at the AO?).

Will be hard to retain my title with a uWP-punishment. Will have to come up with some daring predictions in the SF and/or F.

I rarely pick a uWP for this kind of draw.
This week, I got my usual Serena in Auckland. Then I challenged myself to go with Osaka in Brisbane.
Both won their first matches. So far so good.

Followed my brain, but should have followed my heart and picked Rybakina.

she is into the SF, and currently on #32 in the live rankings. But she will lose that spot if she loses her SF: #33 and #34 are Alexandrova and Muguruza, and that happens to be the other SF.

OK, Rybakina into the final! Now win the whole thing please.

I see that she is scheduled to be in Hobart (seed #2, with Mertens as seed #1). A good thing: this is the first time that her ranking in high enough to actually play these WTA-events, so better to take advantage and collect points as a basis for a stable ranking.
Some would say that resting for the AO is better, but if you lose early, you end up with hardly playing in 3-4 weeks at the start of the season.

I don't believe I have watched a Rybakina match, I am paying attention because she is on your radar.

She is on my radar since St.Peterburg 2018 where I saw 3 of her matches (she was ranked outside the Top200 as teenager). Being from Kazachstan, she did not get any wildcards after that (you need to be from a bigger country to get those, or have the right connections/coaches- talent has nothing to do with that). so she had to fight her way up via ITF etc... once she broke the top 100 last year, it went fast (as expected): some semi's, some finals, incl her first WTA title. Ended #36.

First important event where she got direct MD access was Wuhan last year, and she got to the QF (beating Halep along the way).
So his year she will have access to the MD of all major events for the first time, and will even be seeded. So I expect her in the top 20 very soon.
